It’s been a while since I last wrote, but you cannot blame me! My cooking gas has been out and I have been making 2 hour long meals on my only induction stove, all thanks to the strait of Hormuz who’s importance in my life was made very apparent recently. Three nights ago my meal was a block of cheese with half a bottle of whiskey. At least alcohol is still available!

The world is at the peak of its madness and the people in charge seem to be acting like toddlers – crying and breaking stuff they come across. But thats not the worst that the world is experiencing today. The tech world is experiencing a major shift and the highest paid corporate workers of the last two decades are now facing job uncertainty.

There are a few reasons for this shift, and yes, AI is one of them. But not really the way the world had predicted a year ago.

Did AI finally take the jobs!?

No, AI did not take my colleagues’ jobs. Not even close. But AI’s enormous belly did, by eating up all the funding of the tech world! With 80% of the tech funding being splurged on AI, tech companies are forced to cut on resources. And that means lay offs!!

The baffling part though is that the tech giants are pouring money into AI and reducing funding for the smaller companies – essentially reducing their own profits! You see – when companies dont have money for Google and Meta ads, or when every laid off person is one account less on Google workspace – that means loss in revenue.

I am sure these billionaire geniuses have some kind of a plan, but with ChatGPT’s latest shutdown of Sora, the reality check is closer than you think. But what is the actual reality right now?

The impact… or the bloodbath

After surviving 4 lay offs at my current company, the job feels like Squid Games at this point. People playing dangerous games and killing each other the first change they get is the norm. The work is no more about customers, but about survival.

AI is getting its closure – settling down into a defined role in our lives. But the question remains – will it settle in time for compnaies to get back their fundings and their employees, or will it change the tech world as we know today forever?

Maybe I will answer this after the next round of lay offs. Either way, blood will be spilled.
